How can Teaching Schools support Northamptonshire?

What are Teaching Schools?

The Government White Paper; The Importance of Teaching (2010) stated that the aim was to “develop a national network of Teaching Schools on the model of teaching hospitals to lead the training and professional development of teachers and head teachers, and increase the number of National and Local Leaders of Education – head teachers of excellent schools who commit to working to support other schools”

  • Teaching schools play the lead in a “self improving” school system
  • They are focused on system led leadership, using capacity, resources and specialists to support their alliances and local schools
  • The National College for School Leadership has accredited over 600 Teaching Schools since their launch

The Big Picture

Teaching Schools focus on

  • Key drivers; autonomy, collaboration, freedom, diversity, self-improvement, accountability
  • The challenges: building capacity, confidence and trust
  • The goal: that elements of a devolved system are held in balance so that:
    1.    Autonomy doesn’t become isolation
    2.    Diversity doesn’t act as a barrier to collaboration
    3.    Accountability does not become regulation

System Leadership

System leaders care about, and work for, the success of all children, not just those in their own school

  • Some system leadership roles are often undertaken by those with formal designations that are identified against strict criteria such as SLEs, LLEs, NLEs, Heads of TSs and NLGs
  • Other key system leadership roles include CEOs of academy chains, principals of academies which act as sponsors and other important system roles such as chairs of head teacher networks
  • In addition to working beyond their own institutions system leaders often help shape national policy thinking, policy and practice
  • System leadership opportunities need to be considered in a non-hierarchical manner, and will depend on an individual leader’s circumstances as well as that of their school

Big6Role of Teaching Schools

As well as offering training and support for their alliance themselves, teaching schools will identify and co-ordinate expertise from their alliance, using the best leaders and teachers to:

  1. play a greater role in training new entrants to the profession
  2. lead peer-to-peer professional and leadership development
  3. identify and develop leadership potential
  4. provide support for other schools
  5. designate and broker Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs)
  6. engage in research and development

bix6 2This is called the “big six” and is the core role of every Teaching School and what we are accountable for.

In addition to this, each Teaching School works collaboratively with the other Teaching Schools in the county – this is called the mini-region and also works collaboratively with the region Teaching Schools through the East-Midlands Teaching School Alliance (EMTSA).

You do not have to be a strategic member or alliance member of a Teaching School to access their services or support.  Some schools link with Teaching Schools as partners to be involved with the work they do.  Teaching Schools may sometimes offer a charge to be an alliance member – if this is the case, this financial commitment should go towards places on CPD courses.

National Leaders of Education (NLE)

NLEs are exceptional head teachers and principals who offer support to local schools, helping them improve their leadership skills and capacity.

  • Outstanding serving head teachers with at least 3 years’ headship experience
  • Remaining at current school for at least 2 years after being selected
  • Be accountable for 1 or more schools that meet the National Support School (NSS) criteria
  • Have the full support of their school’s governing body and director of children’s services or senior educational professiona
  • Have the track-record and skills to work in this way
  • Designated and brokered by Teaching Schools or individually, but may be from any school

Specialist Leaders of Education (SLE)

SLEs are exceptional leaders with a subject or specialist area who can provide specific support to schools who have identified a problem that is specific and need some coaching and guidance.

  • Designation to acknowledging the important role of middle and senior leaders in supporting their peers
  • Excellent professionals in leadership positions below the head teacher, with the capacity, capability and commitment to work beyond their own school
  • Outstanding in a particular area, for example: a subject specialism; inclusion; ITT mentoring; performance management; behaviour; school business management
  • Have the track-record and skills to work in this way
  • Designated and brokered by Teaching Schools, but may be from any school

NLEs and SLEs, along with National Leaders of Governance (NLGs) can be deployed from all Teaching Schools in Northamptonshire based on specific areas.

ITT and School Direct

Northamptonshire Teaching Schools take a leading role in Initial Teacher Training and School Direct.  All have the experience and skills to be able to offer any advice and guidance that schools need to get involved with recruiting graduate teachers.

School Direct has 2 different routes – salaried and non-salaried.  Salaried enables the trainee to be responsible for classes independently, however, they must be paid a minimum of UQT1 (£16,136) on this route.  Salary grants are available for specific subjects.  The non-salaried or training route has no wage commitment and trainees can access a bursary dependent on subject area.

Northamptonshire Teaching Schools run 3 School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) Providers.  These are-

  • Northampton Teacher Training Partnership (NTTP) – based at Northampton School for Boys, Northampton
  • Grand Union Teacher Training Partnership (GUTP) – based at Sponne School, Towcester
  • Teach Northants – based at The Duston School, Northampton

CPD and Leadership Development

Northamptonshire Teaching Schools take a leading role in the delivery of CPD courses for local schools.  Courses are varied and programmes can often link to specialist areas of strength, however, all Teaching Schools will be willing to speak to schools about potential training they would like to see available.

  • Senior Leadership
  • Subject Specialist training
  • Network meetings
  • Conferences

School to School Support (S2SS)

Northamptonshire Teaching Schools are able to access centralised funding to work with and support schools who have an identified improvement need.  Funding amounts range from £5,000 through to approximately £20,000 and bids need to be placed in order to receive the funding.

As the Teaching Schools are responsible for the impact of the funding, money is held by the supporting school and a plan of how it will be used will be discussed in full with the supported school.
